'Extraordinary Rendition'

We all hear of extraordinary rendition but how many of us actually know what this means...

* 'Extraordinary rendition' refers to the practice of states, which are bound by human rights standards, transporting suspects to states not bound by such rules with the aim of gaining intelligence.

* Effectively, this is the ‘contracting out’ of torture. There is considerable evidence that UK airports and airspace have been used by CIA planes taking suspects to face interrogation in other states, where human rights are not protected.

* While our government denies that the practice occurs, the United Nations Committee Against Torture believes it has the evidence and has condemned the US administration. Both the European Parliament and Council of Europe believe extraordinary rendition flights have gone through Europe, and hundreds of CIA flights have been logged flying through the UK.

* We are calling for an independent investigation into the allegations and new laws to prevent 'torture flights' using UK airports and airspace.
