Held Without Charge In Guantánamo For 33 Months

Martin was taken to Guantanamo via secret CIA rendition flight

Martin Mubanga talked to Amnesty International about his detention at the US Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

The first two weeks I spent in Camp X-ray. That was basically an outdoor cage which let in the elements as well as the local inhabitants, creatures, insects, spiders, that sort of thing.

I was in isolation so I wasn't allowed to speak to other so called detainees and also for the first two weeks in Camp Delta I was also in isolation. This was part of the structure of the camp to try to break you physically, mentally and spiritually so keeping you in isolation was one of their main weapons.

I can't say that I have one particular worst memory because there were many incidents which stick out in my mind.

From being in isolation and practically being stripped naked apart from a pair of shorts... In isolation the air-conditioning was left on so it was particularly cold at night. I wasn't able to sleep and had to do exercises throughout the night periodically, I kept waking up because of the cold. And also on top of that I was threatened with punishment for exercising in a particular way to try to keep warm. On other occasions in interrogation I was mistreated.

There are a few things that stand out in my mind. Some letters that were sent to brothers contained photos of their families or their children. Some of these letters had to pass clearance and censorship and therefore they required a stamp. A lot of these stamps were quite maliciously done of the faces of the children of the brothers. They couldn't even see the faces of their children on the photos. There was no need for that.

All these small things add up and become big things especially when you haven't seen your children or your wife for one, two, three years.
