In September 2008 the "War on Terror" will enter its ninth year of counter-terrorism activities. The last eight years have seen the rendition of 800 detainees to Guantanamo Bay, the detention of 40,000 in Afghanistan, 30,000 in Iraq and 15,000 missing in secret detention which only begin to paint a small part of the abuses of human rights that are taking place globally.
Cageprisoners has been working since 2003 to help end the illegal detentions in Guantanamo Bay and lobby for the re-establishment of due process and fair trials for all those detained unlawfully worldwide. Working closely with former detainees, their families, lawyers, activists and the media, we have initiated a number of campaigns and efforts to help bring change to the lives of others.
"Cageprisoners was one of the few organisations that actively campaigned for my release while I was detained in Guantanamo Bay. With 25,000 unique visitors coming to the website every month, the website and organisation has established itself as key player in bringing an end to the unlawful detentions and having grass roots support. Since returning I have been working closely with Cageprisoners speaking endlessly around the country and, as a result, have received tremendous moral support from both Muslim and non-Muslim communities – by the grace of Allah. Our work has been endorsed by people as diverse as Lord Nazir Ahmed, Imam Anwar al-Awlaki, Joanna Lumley, Gareth Pierce, Yvonne Ridley and former prisoners, as well as former British and US soldiers, to name but a few." (Moazzam Begg)
As we all know, Ramadan is a time when Muslims can really reflect on the Qur'an, the life of the Prophet and what it means to be a Muslim. Cageprisoners would like the opportunity to speak to the congregation in your mosque or Islamic centre to highlight the cause of Muslim prisoners unlawfully detained through the "War on Terror". If possible, we would also like the opportunity to raise funds for our work. Abu Musa Al Ash'ari narrated from our noble Messenger of Allah (pbuh), "Free the prisoners of war, feed the hungry, visit the sick." (Bukhari)
