Urgent Request – Show Your Support For Faraj Hassan

The case of Faraj Hassan, who has spent over six years detained without charge, with his liberty restricted by various orders, returns to the High Court on Tuesday. Faraj will be present in court again. It is expected that this will be the final day of the hearing.

As mentioned in a previous alert, much to Faraj’s disappointment last week, on the first day of the hearing, there were only one or two friendly faces in the courtroom. We are therefore once again entreating anyone who is able to attend the hearings this week to come and show their support. Due to the short notice I know that many of you would have liked to have attended but were unable to do so. So now here is your chance!

When: Tuesday 1st December 2009, 10:30am – 4pm
Where: Room 27 (next to the cafe near the entrance; NB: it will say Mr Al Saadi on the door),
High Court, Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand (
Nearest Tube: Chancery Lane, Temple)

Faraj wishes to thank everyone who sent messages of support and particularly those who attended court last week.

Who is Faraj Hassan?

Faraj Hassan came to the UK in 2002, fleeing persecution in his native Libya. He was arrested shortly thereafter and spent 15 months detained without trial before being eventually charged under the Terrorism Act in 2003 and served with an Italian extradition warrant. Although the extradition order was ultimately suspended he continued to be detained for another four years on the basis of secret evidence in HMP Long Lartin, with the government seeking to deport him to Libya. Whilst his deportation was ruled unlawful, he is now subject to a control order in addition to a UN financial sanction which prevents him from obtaining any income.
